Common questions
What is a sliding scale?
A reduced session fee based on your household income and circumstances. Reduced fees and discounts are available for low-income families and for people without counselling insurance coverage. You can simply ask — no lengthy proof process.
Can you bill my insurance directly?
In Alberta, direct billing may be available depending on your insurance provider and plan. It is worth checking before your first session so you know what to expect.
What about Ontario and British Columbia?
For clients in Ontario and BC, receipts are provided after each session for you to submit to your insurance provider. Whether you are reimbursed, and how much, depends entirely on your individual insurance plan.
How do I check my coverage?
Look for wording such as "Registered Social Worker", "social work" or "counselling" in your extended health benefits, and ask your insurer what per-session and annual limits apply. You are welcome to ask for help understanding the answer.
Is counselling tax deductible in Canada?
Services provided by an RSW / RCSW may qualify as an eligible medical expense for Canadian tax purposes. Please confirm your own situation with the CRA or a tax professional.
